All majors must complete, with grades of C or better, 36 s.h. No course may be used to satisfy more than one requirement.

NOTE: When the topic is appropriate, English 360 may be included among the courses that satisfy the English and American 300 level requirements. Students preparing for graduate work should take English 340, Literary Criticism, as one of their Free Electives.

Students seeking secondary certification in English must take English 241 (Modern English Grammar) or English 341 (Linguistics); English 356 (Teaching of Writing); and English 373 (Secondary Methods in English). English 341 may be selected for the Cultural Studies area in the major, and English 241, 341, 356, and 373 may be chosen as free electives.

 

English Minor

All English minors must complete, with grades of C or above, English 158, Introduction to Literary Interpretation (3 s.h.) and an additional 15 s.h. of English courses numbered 153-399.

English minors should meet with the Department Chair as soon as possible to plan their minor, which can include a concentration in some aspect of English studies, such as literary genres, American or British literature, a historical approach to literature, multicultural literature, cultural studies, language, or writing.

Students preparing to teach English should take English 241 or 341 and English 356. They should also consult the English Education Coordinator for further recommendations.
