Saint Xavier University to host debate on Iraq War.
Saint Xavier University will host a debate on the Iraq War featuring Professor Peter N. Kirstein and nationally known conservative David Horowitz from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 29, at McGuire Hall.
Kirstein is known for his antiwar position and invited Horowitz, a leading conservative supporter of the war and critic of higher education, to Saint Xavier University to assess the war in a debate titled “The Iraq War: In the Classroom and Beyond.†They will also exchange views on the appropriate use of the classroom for discussion of the Iraq War.
“The Iraq War is a major event of our time. It affects our students and many of their families. Having the opportunity to exchange contrasting views on the war is consistent with critical thinking that is so vital to a university,†Kirstein said. “The classroom is also an important venue to explore and develop conversations on issues such as war that profoundly impact both the local and international community.â€
Horowitz is editor of online newsmagazine “FrontPageMag.com.†He is a nationally known author of many books, including his most recent book The Professors: The 101 Most Dangerous Academics in America. He is president of the Center for the Study of Popular Culture and founder of Students for Academic Freedom. Horowitz promotes his “Academic Bill of Rights,†an eight-point manifesto that seeks to eliminate alleged political bias in university hiring and grading. He is founder of “DiscoverTheNetworks,†a Web site that profiles the many components of the left in America.
Kirstein is a professor of history at Saint Xavier University and specializes in American foreign policy, the analysis of war, the use of the atomic bomb during World War II, and the Vietnam War. A nationally known advocate for peace and justice, Kirstein is a progressive critic of American foreign policy. He has lectured on the Iraq War and academic freedom across the United States, including American University, Ohio Wesleyan University and Valparaiso University, and is the author of numerous articles and op-ed pieces on the subjects.
John Gutowski, professor of English at Saint Xavier University, will moderate the event.
The event is sponsored by the American Association of University Professors-SXU Chapter, the Political Science Forum, the Young America’s Foundation, Saint Xavier University’s Department of History and Political Science and Department of Sociology and Anthropology and Criminal Justice; and the Women and Gender Studies Program.
