Challenges, Failures, and Successes

First Page

Hello, my name is [INSERT YOUR NAME HERE]. Welcome to my first page. Below I have completed the seven initial tasks of the Webfolio project.

Instructions for the "First Page" Assignment

The Assignment: You will build (or edit, rather) your first Web page during class on March 22 and 23 (Day 3 and Day 4 of the project)—after your first two days of Webfolio lessons. The file for your "First Page" assignment is this very page, which has the file name of "first-page.html." The file lives in the "challenges" folder, which itself lives in "public_html." The Web address to this page is http://english.sxu.edu/~yourname/challenges/first-page.html. For all the tasks listed below, place the content in the purple-bordered box (table) above. As you add content, the box will expand. Label each task with its number as a subhead, and use "Heading 3" as follows:

Task 1, Task 2, Task 3, etc.

Here are your seven tasks for your "First Page" assignment:

TASK 1: Create a link to a Web site you'd like to share with the class (remember: keep it appropriate!). Underneath the link, provide a brief annotation of the link—which simply means you should write a line or two that explains to a newcomer what will be found at the site when the link is clicked.

Task 2: Create a link to a new page you create. HINT: Create the new page FIRST. Save the page somewhere inside your "public_html" folder (in the "challenges" folder is a good place). Then use the link tool in the Nvu toolbar to create the link. Add some content to the new page—whatever you wish, as long as it is appropriate. Try to make it interesting and worthwhile.

TASK 3: Create a return link from your new page back to this page. The text of the link should read, "Return to First Page."

TASK 4: Copy an image from the Web, save it to your public_html folder, and then make the image appear somewhere on this page.

TASK 5: Create a three-column table inside the purple table above. Make each column a different color. Make the table 70%. Make the table centered. Make the table borderless.

TASK 6: Experiment with some Web page building feature not mentioned here (e.g., putting a background image to your page, highlighting text, etc.).

TASK 7, Collaboration Exercise: "Tell the story" of how you reached out for help on a particular task in building your pages—OR how you provided assistance to someone else. See if you can place your "Collaboration Story" inside a grey box (like the one these instructions are in)—as the final item to appear in the purple-bordered box above.

Remember that you will be asked to present your page to the class. Try to make your page as entertaining and worthwhile as possible. Try to teach your classmates something.
