Sharon,

Our office compiles a list of students who have permission, and they are not

allowed to even log on to the internet without that permission. Also, in

case the log in filter fails, or the kid logs in on someone elses's

password, there is a list posted in the lab (and you could get one for your

room) that names those students not allowed on the internet. Why couldn't

you make such a list and have it posted in your room?

Or is the problem something other than not being able to keep track of who

has permission and who doesn't.

Regarding access--yes that is a huge problem. And it's a problem we need to

be noisy about. The funding push at the moment is for integrating

technology into the regular curriculum rather than offering separate

classes. Our district applied for a Technology Literacy Challenge Grant,

and that's something you might want to look into through your state

department of education--providing our legislators don't shoot the grant in

the foot.

But there are some other things to think about besides technology. Like

Ted, I'm a believer in the promise of technology to help teachers make this

bridge that connects all students to meaningful learning environments. But

let's look at what it is that technology can do, and then see how we can

approximate that without the technology. Technology makes it easier to

publish students work. But you can publish student work without having

things go up on the web. Technology encourages a sense of play--a VERY

important element of learning. What can you do to make play a meaningful

part of your classroom? Are there ways (or do you do this already?) to

bring the power of magic markers and drawing into your classroom. Fran

Claggett has some wonderful ideas for integrating this aspect of literacy

into other literate tasks. And bringing more graphics kinds of literacy

into the classroom helps build bridges for all students--those who have more

schoolish forms of literacy and those who have other, less valued, forms of

literacy.
