Locke saw virtue as "the first and most necessary of those endowments that belong to a man or gentleman" (55). He states that it is of upmost importance that men be taught of the goodness of God and to honor the truth. In our modern educational systems debates rage over the topic of character education. Many people believe that character education is the responsiblity of the family, and that public schools have no place in training students for virtue. On the other hand, there has been a dramatic increase in the past few years in the number of school violences. Although I tend to agree that values belong primarily in the home and family, I cannot help but wonder whether character education is becoming a necessity in schools. My greatest worry is that the schools will indoctrinate students with traditional values and that, inevitably, certain students will be damaged by such treatment. I have listed below sites that deal with the issues of character education.
